About this artwork
As part of the Territories Blue series, Maquias came about late in the process. Even though I thought the series was finished, I set this piece aside, then returned to it later and let it speak to me further.
The piece incorporates my sub-series "Passages," which actually emerged after Maquias was created. This work begins to examine possible routes my ancestors might have traveled—imaginary routes, since I know so little about how they reached… the United States. Maquias is more playful than other pieces in the series, imagining their passages in a happier state of mind.
I asked the painting its name, and she answered "Maquias," spelling it out for me. When I recently looked up the meaning, I discovered this: Maquia is associated with ambition and originality in business, suggesting opportunities for financial success. It's also a village in the Department of Ancash in Peru, and the name derives from the Quechua verb "mak-yay," which means "to reach". How perfect is that?
Jaye Alison Moscariello harnesses water-based mediums like acrylic and watercolor, influenced by a creative upbringing and artistic journey. Through abstraction and intuitive color selection, she captures the interplay between forms, with lines that articulate deep-seated emotions. Her art resonates with joy and upliftment, transforming personal and worldly complexities into visual harmony.
I was recently interviewed by Harryet Candee of The Artful Mind magazine, you can read the interview and see some of my current and past work here: https://issuu.com/theartfulmindartzine/docs/the_artful_mind_june_2024_issuu
