About this artwork
Bisected is a journey to my childhood of the 60s and even earlier, the 50s - unconsciously or subconsciously I chose the colors and shapes , and later only as this painting became its own being did I find and relate associations. In this case I was mindful of the cartoon “The Jetsons” - a 1960s cartoon taking place in the future, with flying cars and robotic maids. I was also thinking about my grandmother Mamie (I think about her a lot, she raised…
me when I was a very small child), and I recalled her ‘bark cloth” drapes that had vibrant colors and shapes and patterns. Also remembering the shapes of the early television sets.
Bisected takes apart the memories and places them onto the canvas.
Interesting that the definition of ‘bisected’ is “to divide into two parts equally, or divided by long straight lines.” Maybe I was cut in half as a child?
