About this artwork
Meet the "Opponent"—the face of someone who just heard your opinion and is doing their absolute best to look polite. With this piece, I wanted to move away from the stoic heroes of antiquity and capture that universal "I’m sorry, but no" expression. It is a portrait of a man who looks like he regrets your life choices, while secretly reveling in his own stubbornness.
While the bust mimics a weathered archaeological find, the emotion is purely modern.… Those tightly pursed lips and that judgmental gaze scream passive-aggression. He isn’t just disagreeing; he is enjoying being the only one in the room who "knows better." It’s a playful jab at our own egos when we encounter a truth that isn't ours.
The monochromatic palette adds historical weight, but every exaggerated wrinkle highlights that awkward, comedic moment where courtesy meets total defiance. "Opponent" is a monument to those whose regret is nothing more than a well-rehearsed performance.
I am a Lithuanian artist with more than three decades of experience in visual art, rooted in fresco, bas-relief, and monumental painting. Shaped by European cultural heritage and the old masters, I developed my practice through large-scale commissions for public and private interiors, where I learned to work with structure, surface, atmosphere, and emotional presence. Although I have worked in art for over 30 years, I began focusing on canvas painting only three years ago, which is why my exhibition history in this field is still emerging. In my paintings, I explore the human figure, quiet psychological tension, and the fragile balance between beauty and vulnerability. My wider practice also includes children’s book illustrations, album cover designs, and I was selected to paint for the film The Peasants.
