About this artwork
In *The Shawl*, my aim was to create a contrast between the dense and the light, working with a restrained palette of greys, ochres and worn greens. I used several layers of material to build up the central texture, applying spatulas and letting the relief emerge little by little. I wanted the shape to float, as if suspended in the air, conveying both weight and fragility at the same time.
I kept the background as ethereal as possible, using glazing… techniques with diluted layers of paint to create a soft, hazy atmosphere. I wanted the central texture to stand out against this undefined space, inviting the viewer to explore the work closely and feel the tension between the material and the immaterial, the heavy and the light.
