Artist Statement
This sculpture explores the permanence of culture through the unexpected union of concrete and carpet imagery. By embedding the photograph of a traditional rug into freshly cast cement, I merge the fragile intimacy of woven heritage with the cold endurance of industrial material. The patterned surface becomes a visual echo of memory sealed within stone.
As an Azerbaijani, the carpet is not merely an object of craft;… it is a symbol of my roots, identity, and collective history. Its motifs — once soft and tactile — now appear fossilized within the solid form, suggesting that cultural memory persists even as time reshapes its surroundings. The piece becomes a vessel for continuity, holding the essence of tradition in a transformed but unbroken state.
“Enduring Weave” reflects on the resilience of culture in a world of erosion and change.
Murad Akbarli, a versatile artist, dips his brushes into mixed media, harnessing traditional and innovative materials alike. His style amalgamates classical and contemporary influences, utilizing dynamic, emotional brushstrokes and intricate layering techniques to create complex textures brimming with depth. Through this, Akbarli endeavors to bridge the tangible with the ethereal, rendering unseen emotion into tangible artwork.
