About this artwork
The flock of sheep, tightly packed and charging forward, immediately evokes motifs of mass, conformity, and blind obedience. The title "at the front" reinforces this impression: it alludes to military contexts, to vulnerability, forced movement, and advancing into something uncertain or destructive. The sheep appear not as individual beings, but as a collective body—interchangeable, controllable, consumable.
The blurring of contours at the bottom… of the image is particularly striking. The sheep appear to merge into roots or earth structures there, which can be interpreted as meaningless.
as a loss of individuality, the form dissolves, identity disappears.
The somber, almost monochrome color scheme underlines an atmosphere of hopelessness, threat, and moral gravity.
Stefan Görres is a painter, photographer, and digital artist; he uses digital painting based on photographs to artistically explore the mutability of our perception. His technique combines traditional painting with digital innovation, distorting everyday motifs and lighting situations and transforming them into new, surreal realities. His works play with illusion and reality and powerfully convey the emotion of constant change: "Nothing is as it was."
