About this artwork
"Step by Step" tells the story of life's journey – step by step. It's about moving forward, about moving on, even if you sometimes hesitate. The first step, which is often the hardest, is particularly highlighted by the orange rectangle in the image. The color orange represents change, transformation. It's about the moment when you gather the courage to set out on your journey. Each individual "step" in the image is backed by a book page, symbolizing… the stories life writes. The textured surface recalls everything that shapes life: experiences, decisions, traces.
This work is intended to encourage you: Go forth, even if you don't yet know the path. New stories will emerge, borne of hope, confidence, and trust.
Susan Metzendorf, a Hamburg-based painter, works with acrylic paints, pigments, inks, and textures. Her works emerge from a color mood and are an interplay of color gradients, geometric forms, and emotional depth. Influenced by her work as a mathematics educator, she translates experiences, thoughts, and feelings into pictorial compositions of circles, squares, or rectangles in specific numerical ratios, which are interrelated in a variety of ways. Her abstract paintings invite you to take an inner journey and aim to give the viewer hope, joy and motivation.
