About this artwork
“Tree: Combining Illusion and Reality” draws inspiration from the void and distortion. I have previously created several versions printed on photo paper, and this special version printed on canvas represents an experiment of mine. To further blur the line between photography and painting, I used different materials as the base; the unique texture of the canvas lends the work a distinct feel.
Yan Wang blends photography, darkroom processes, and traditional Chinese painting, drawing from his early training in Chinese art and international studies. He innovatively merges Eastern aesthetics and Western techniques, using brushwork to deconstruct and transform photographic images, often employing black-and-white darkroom methods and exploring various media like glass and canvas. His painterly, surreal, and poetic works evoke a sense of nostalgia, reverence, and longing, serving as a tribute to his teacher and synthesizing worlds, memories, and cultural emotion.
