Charcoal on thick tracing paper
This work is part of a series that explores the human figure through repetition, erasure, and accumulation. Rather than presenting a single, resolved image, I’m interested in how the figure can emerge gradually—through fragments, attempts, and corrections.
The use of thick tracing paper is essential to this process. Its semi-transparency allows the drawing to exist in layers, where marks can… be reinforced, shifted, or partially concealed. This creates a sense of instability, as if the figure is both present and slipping away at the same time.
In this piece, multiple studies coexist on the same surface: small sketches, structural attempts, and a more developed back view. Together, they form a kind of visual memory of the act of drawing—where each line records a decision, a hesitation, or a revision.
Adrià Cabiscol is a self-taught artist who works primarily with charcoal, drawing, and mixed dry media, focused on the expressive potential of portraiture. His technique balances gestural mark-making with underlying structure, embracing smudging, layering, erasing, and visible corrections to explore the dynamic tension between construction and dissolution. Through these raw, searching gestures, his art conveys the vulnerability and fleeting presence of the human figure, evoking deep empathy and introspection in the viewer.
