Leonardo dedicated his entire life to a single question: what is man?
The Vitruvian Man was his boldest response—the human figure inscribed within the perfect circle, measured, proportionate, the center of the universe. A symbol so powerful that five hundred years later it remains the emblem of human reason.
But postmodern man no longer fits neatly into that circle.
In Mandala, I place the Vitruvian Man at the center, as Leonardo imagined him—arms… outstretched, perfect in his geometry. But his face is divided: half flesh, half skull. Above him, the eyes of the Mona Lisa gaze down, eternally ambiguous, eternally unanswered. To his left, Grant Wood's American Gothic couple—the moral rigidity of the New World, its severity, its uneasy silence. To his right, Cubism fragments all that reason cannot contain.
The circle encompasses everything.
A mandala is a map of the cosmos. This is the map of the cosmos that we have constructed.

Alejandro Reyna is a Mexican muralist and painter with over 50 years of experience. A Master of Fine Arts from the National School of San Carlos, UNAM, his legacy can be seen in hospitals, airports, and government palaces throughout Mexico through 23 monumental murals.
He has conceived collections that inhabit their own conceptual universes: the human psyche and its emotions, pre-Hispanic mythology, the movement of the body, the tensions between opposites. His most celebrated work, "Aurum Nostrum," pays homage to the great masters of Western art, transmuting them into a profoundly contemporary language.
