About this artwork
What is "self portrait"? My version is I, as the painter, am painting myself doing something, painting. I do not imagine myself painting; I am painting and I see myself reflected in a mirror. I find that subjects looking at themselves in a mirror do not smile but look serious--not the most attractive posture. In this painting all the above is true. The self portrait 2 that follows this, is also of a busy me, painting but there is so much context…
to this painting that the usual glum painter in the mirror is having fun. The difference, I think, is that the image of the painter is not the focus of the work. a bystander.
