About this artwork
What is "self portrait"? My version is I, as the painter, am painting myself doing something, painting. I do not imagine myself painting; I am painting and I see myself reflected in a mirror. I find that subjects looking at themselves in a mirror do not smile but look serious--not the most attractive posture. In this painting all the above is true. The self portrait 2 that follows this, is also of a busy me, painting but there is so much context… to this painting that the usual glum painter in the mirror is having fun. The difference, I think, is that the image of the painter is not the focus of the work. a bystander.
Alix Hallman Travis is a painter with a background of formal study at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Art Students League in New York, working primarily in watercolors and oils. She employs loose, expressive brushwork in watercolor and bold palette knife techniques with oils, preferring whimsy and vibrant, imaginative compositions over strict realism. Her work joyfully captures the life of local communities, radiating optimism and happiness through her signature use of radiant yellows, aiming to evoke the same delight and warmth she feels about the world around her.
