Sovereignty began as an exploration of presence — what it means to occupy a room, a moment, a life with complete authority. I was drawn to the female figure stripped of detail, reduced to silhouette and light, because I wanted to paint power without ornament. Without explanation.
The technique is stencil printing with silver paint applied by hand directly onto the surface. I chose silver deliberately… — it is the colour of moonlight, of mirrors, of things that reflect rather than absorb. In certain light the figure seems to glow from within. In other light she disappears almost entirely into the darkness around her. She decides how much of herself to reveal.

Alona Petliarska, a painter and digital artist with foundational training in Art and Design and ongoing studies in animation, weaves classical mastery with contemporary abstraction. Her Atmospheric Figuratism style fuses delicate lines and shadowy forms to capture the intangible essence of the human soul, often drawing on the rugged beauty of the Orkney Islands for inspiration. Her works evoke profound stillness and invite the viewer to pause at the threshold of emotion, conveying resilience, quiet power, and the universal poetry of inner growth.
