About this artwork
She doesn't run from the dark. She dances with it.
Our Dark Duet is a painting about the relationship between a woman and her shadow self — the parts of us that are wild, unpredictable, and impossible to tame. The ravens are not a threat. They are her companions. Her witnesses. The ones who know her completely.
In mythology, ravens are messengers between worlds — between the living and the dead, between the known and the unknown. In this painting… they circle her not with menace but with recognition.
She is one of them.
The white hair, the red lips, the tears that may be grief or may be release — this is a woman who has stopped pretending. She has chosen the dark duet over the performance of light.
Painted in watercolour, acrylic and colour pencils. The pink and purple palette was chosen deliberately — softness and wildness existing in the same breath.
Alona Petliarska, a painter and digital artist with foundational training in Art and Design and ongoing studies in animation, weaves classical mastery with contemporary abstraction. Her Atmospheric Figuratism style fuses delicate lines and shadowy forms to capture the intangible essence of the human soul, often drawing on the rugged beauty of the Orkney Islands for inspiration. Her works evoke profound stillness and invite the viewer to pause at the threshold of emotion, conveying resilience, quiet power, and the universal poetry of inner growth.
