About this artwork
“Fragility of Being II” is part of the 2025 winter exhibition “From Shadow to Light” at the Neue Galerie Dresden. Using a process-oriented mixed-oil technique, Andreas Garbe approaches the human face not as a fixed image, but as a sensitive state. The portrait emerges from numerous glazes and overlays, in which form and dissolution mutually interpenetrate each other.
Contours are deliberately left open, transitions appear soft and fluid. The face… seems both present and vulnerable, as if caught in a moment of pause. Colored indentations and transparent layers reveal previous stages of the work, lending the image a quiet depth.
“Fragility of Being II” addresses vulnerability not as a weakness, but as a fundamental human experience. The work invites the viewer to accept uncertainty and openness as part of existence and to reposition their own perception within this field of tension.
« Art that fascinates me is often like a symbiosis of philosophical magic and good craft. »
Andreas Garbe is an artist based in Germany whose paintings have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Switzerland. Working abstractly with figurative and representational influences, his diverse compositions are both atmospheric and philosophical. In addition, Garbe explores themes relating to social issues, literature, meditation, and sensory perception. His landscapes, figurative pieces and abstractions are created using acrylics, oils, and resin on canvas.
