About this artwork
"Ernest" is part of a portrait series by Andreas Garbe in which he focuses on writers who have accompanied and influenced him over the years. The work refers to Ernest Hemingway without depicting him biographically or illustratively; at its core is an inner attitude: concentration, discipline, and the tension between strength and vulnerability.
The painting was created using a process-oriented mixed-media acrylic technique. Layers were built up,… thickened, and partially opened again over an extended period, so that the surface visibly preserves the process. Cool blue and turquoise tones form the face, which is framed by warmer yellow and ochre areas, creating a dynamic and compelling effect.
The figure appears composed and introspective, not withdrawn, but possessing a quiet presence. “Ernest” is not a classical portrait, but a painterly condensation of attitude and inner state. The work is part of the 2025 winter exhibition “From Shadow to Light” at the Neue Galerie Dresden.
