In Bittersweet Symphony, music, nature, and human emotion merge into a surreal visual world. A trumpet permeates the composition, connecting four lemons whose shapes transform into female faces. Their closed eyes initially convey peace and harmony—but the visible tears reveal a second, melancholic layer.
The intense yellow of the fruit and brass contrasts sharply with the deep blues and greens of the nighttime surroundings. In the background, a… luminous moon, a Mediterranean landscape, and a small waterfront town appear. Their golden reflections continue the musical movement of the foreground into the distance.
The lemon thus becomes a symbol of contrasting emotions: bright and full of life, yet sweet and sour. The trumpet unites these emotions like a melody that can simultaneously embody joy and melancholy.
