About this artwork
Having lived most of my life in Cape Town, Table Mountain is a constant inspiration...an larger-than-life presence which alters seasonally; at times subtlely, often boldly. The colours of our fynbos (indigenous vegetation), the light and atmospheric mood, the strong winds creating the clouds that roll over the top of the mountain giving that impression of a tablecloth. An ever-changing, powerful backdrop to all our lives.
The iconic Table Mountain… towering above The Mother City (Cape Town, South Africa) is a well-known landmark globally.
This view from Signal Hill includes Lions Head in the vista which many locals & visitors alike enjoy hiking up or paragliding off.
Some take the cable car up Table Mountain to get a panoramic view from above.
Some take in the afternoon rays while sipping on sundowners looking down towards Greenpoint, Seapoint and the Atlantic seaboard.
Andrew Cooper is a self-taught artist born in Cape Town, whose work blends semi-realism with a strong sense of mysticism. His paintings are known for their bold use of colour, attention to light, depth and scale, and for creating a distinctive mood and atmosphere. Working from memory and his own photographs, he seeks to capture the essence of a place rather than a literal representation.
Painting professionally since 1987, Andrew began with watercolours before transitioning to acrylics. Deeply inspired by the landscapes of the Western Cape—its mountains, coastlines, rivers, winelands and semi-desert—nature remains the core subject of his work. Alongside these landscapes, his more mystical paintings explore imagination, mythology and the spiritual side of life.
Grounded and humble by nature, his approach to painting is sincere and unpretentious, inviting viewers to step into expansive, immersive scenes shaped by both observation and intuition.
