About this artwork
Ice Structures exists at the boundary between textile image and sculptural relief. From a distance, the monochrome surface appears calm and closed; only upon closer inspection does it reveal its complex spatial structure. Hundreds of folds form a landscape of elevations, depressions, light, and shadow.
The starting point is a precisely developed grid structure, which is transferred to taffeta and then entirely hand-smocked. Backing and quilting… give the surface additional depth and stability. The incident light itself becomes a design element: depending on the time of day and viewing angle, the perception of the relief changes.
“Ice Structures” exists at the intersection of textile art, minimal art, and object art. The work impresses with its focus, its material quality, and its timeless, minimalist aesthetic.
