About this artwork
The detournement series is very post-modern, in the sense that you can recognize familiar artistic iconic works, but they have somehow become uncanny because the artist twisted them into her own. Painted in 1936, this monumental piece pays tribute to the victims of the Guernica village massacre in Spain. The poignant sadness and death was replaced by a… dreamy vision in her interpretation, in a more abstract fight between Eros and Thanatos. This fits her vision that peace starts within oneself, and that the world's turmoil will come to an end only if we all master our own inner peace.
