About this artwork
After a walk along the ocean shore after a storm, I saw driftwood scattered along the coastline. I was captivated by their shapes and textures — I could study them endlessly. Then came the questions:
Where had this wood come from?
What force had broken it?
How far had it traveled, and how long had it taken?
How had its journey changed it?
And how much are we, humans, like these pieces of driftwood — shaped and transformed by the weight of experience?…
These impressions became the foundation for my project “Roots,” where I explore the textures of trees and their many fates — as if revealing silent human stories and invisible scars.
Roots nourish the tree, connect it to the earth, and give it life.
But what happens when the roots lose their native ground?
What challenges arise when a person becomes uprooted from their origin?
Where had this wood come from?
What force had broken it?
How far had it traveled, and how long had it taken?
How had its journey changed it?

Born in an artistic family, Varvara Efimova merges her 13-year academic training in fine arts with contemporary stylistic elements. Employing personal mixed techniques that include delicate transparency and thick expressive layers of oil paint, her works appear as visual poetry, infusing unexpected color combinations and emphasizing the atmosphere over imagery.
