About this artwork
Nine at the Bench is part of my Rogues’ Gallery series, exploring the relationships and quiet dramas that unfold in public life. Inspired by the nine justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, the painting is less a portrait of specific individuals than an imaginative meditation on the personalities, perspectives, and human dynamics that exist behind one of the nation’s most influential institutions.
Through expressive linework, simplified forms, and bold… color, I transform the formality of the judicial bench into a gathering of distinct characters, each suggesting a different temperament and point of view. As in much of my work, the figures are composites rather than literal likenesses, inviting viewers to reflect on the conversations, disagreements, and shared responsibilities that shape collective decision-making.
While rooted in the symbolism of the Supreme Court, the painting ultimately explores broader themes of community, dialogue, and the complexity of human judgment.
