About this artwork
In ancient Lycian times, the coast of İztuzu was a fishing village. At certain times of the year, Lycian fishermen would bid farewell to their wives and go fishing for extended periods. One time, when the fishermen who had set out to sea did not return for a long time, their wives became frantic with curiosity. Finally, losing patience, they all went down to the shore and begged Poseidon, god of the sea, to bring their husbands back. Poseidon could… not bear their pleas and cast their fishing boats ashore with his powerful waves. The women and their husbands, overjoyed at their reunion, embraced each other and ran home. However, they were unfaithful and forgot to thank Poseidon. Angered by this, Poseidon pounded the village shore with his waves. Just as the women were reunited with their men, they feared they would be destroyed by the massive waves. They rushed to the shore to stop Poseidon and lifted their skirts to the sea. Shameful at the women's behavior, Poseidon withdrew his waves

Caner Karavit is an award-winning Turkish artist whose works have been exhibited nationally, as well as in China and Italy. The painter and printmaker separates his artistic outlook and journey into two separate stages. The first being influenced by Western art, which he interpreted through performances, paintings, printmaking, and wood carvings. Karavit's second stage is deeply affected by Chinese art and Buddhist philosophy, which is evident in his more recent works.
