Carmen Rey Berrocal

Spain

Carmen Rey Berrocal (Mataró, Barcelona, 1971) is a contemporary figurative painter. She came to painting in 2014, after a career in chemistry and computer science, and trained in contemporary realism and life drawing workshops with Antonio López, Alex Kanevsky, Joshua LaRock, Irene Cuadrado, and Paco Lafarga.

She paints in oil and acrylic on linen, wood, and canvas. She builds the image in layers and achieves light by removing paint rather than adding it. Her portraits and scenes explore intimacy, introspection, and solitude: figures alone, in conversation with themselves.

She has been exhibiting since 2016 and has presented two solo exhibitions in Mataró, “Búsquedas” (2020) and “Visiones del retrato” (2023). Her work has been shown at the Hsinchu Art Museum in Taipei, in Hong Kong, New York, London, Madrid, and Barcelona, among other places, and is part of private collections in several countries.
