About this artwork
This photograph was taken by McKee in the Painted Desert in Arizona and then printed and painted in his studio in Berlin, Germany. He custom built the space suit using pieces from motorcycle gear, gardening chemical spray tanks and a rented helmet from a theatrical supplier in Berlin. He then enlisted a fellow artist to suit up and trudge through the Arizona desert for the photoshoot. After printing the image black and white and large-scale onto…
canvas, it was then worked into with oil paint, in parts painted very thinly to allow for the photographic details to emerge beneath the paint, in other parts painted in a more opaque painterly style blurring the boundaries between photography and painting.

An American painter based in Germany, McKee works primarily in oil on canvas, using humour, exaggeration, and theatrical imagery to explore power, status, and social behaviour. His strange figures and absurd scenarios invite viewers to consider the systems we live within, the roles we perform, and the discomforts we learn to ignore.
His work has been exhibited internationally at Space K Museum in Seoul, the Moscow Biennale, and the National Arts Club in New York, and featured in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Financial Times, and The Upset, published by Die Gestalten Verlag. He has been artist-in-residence at The Fountainhead Residency in Miami, Florida and the Arctic Hideaway in Norway.
After many years in Berlin, McKee now lives and works in a small village in the German countryside, where distance from city life offers space to observe its rituals, contradictions, and absurdities.
