About this artwork
The image depicts the face of a small boy, his thumb in his mouth, gazing thoughtfully, perhaps even somewhat melancholically, at the world around him. His surroundings are difficult to define, appearing blurred or intertwined; they could suggest the interior of a room or a dream. The slightly muted brown tones in which the work is executed further emphasize the ambiguous nature of what is subtly presented and presumably intended to remain so.
Technically,… the painting exemplifies what I try to make visible through painting: the creation of a surface that connects forms, a unified brushstroke that not only unites individual elements of the subject matter but also lends the work density and homogeneity. The work is executed in oil on canvas.

Chris Bitzer works as a sculptor and painter, originally trained in church restoration, but he has explored a wide range of artistic disciplines. He favors photorealistic oil painting, mostly in black and white, inspired by the aesthetics of old photographs and imbued with a deep respect for craftsmanship. His works range stylistically from classical to experimental, as he constantly explores new techniques. In his paintings, he conveys a quiet yet compelling emotional depth, full of curiosity and a yearning for freedom, far removed from preconceived notions – beauty takes center stage.
