About this artwork
This work unfolds as a mythic clearing organized around a vertical band of golden light suggesting a tree, path, or threshold. Birds and deer-like figures gather on either side in quiet symmetry, rendered with deliberate simplicity that recalls cave painting and early iconography.
Earthy greens and muted ochres create a restrained atmosphere, while the luminous central axis anchors the composition. Faint animal forms appear within the vertical band… itself, as though memory were inscribed into the landscape.
The painting functions as an imaginal ecology: a sanctuary where creatures share a common field of attention. Rather than dramatizing conflict, it reflects on coexistence shaped by stillness, orientation, and reverence.
Harmony appears here not as sentiment, but as structure, life held in relation around a center that remains luminous, steady, and open.
Christopher Lee Chang is a Canadian painter and writer whose interdisciplinary practice bridges painting, psychology, philosophy, and symbolic inquiry. He employs oil on lead-ground panels and canvas, using symbolic abstraction, mythopoetic imagery, and layered psychological landscapes, marked by cycles of concealment and revelation. His technique resists easy resolution, favoring fractured forms and archetypal motifs that hover between abstraction and figuration. Chang’s emotionally charged work delves into themes of identity, exile, mercy, and transformation, inviting viewers into a reflective encounter with complexity, rupture, and the persistent hope for empathy and love.
