About this artwork
The painting 'Untitled (Series 4, No. 3)' depicts a seated man against a minimalist, almost empty background, his anonymized face drawing attention to his posture, musculature, and expressive hand gestures. The muted colors and controlled, yet still recognizable, brushstrokes aim for accuracy without hyperrealistic illusionism.
The man depicts my alcoholic, narcissistic uncle, thus adding another psychological dimension to the work: the depersonalized… face represents an elusive identity, while the body becomes a stage for self-presentation. The open hands appear as a staged vulnerability, demanding attention and validation, and the radical centering of the figure, with the extensive exclusion of its surroundings, reflects a narcissistic structure of self-absorption.

Claudia Kaak is a painter with a background in art education, specializing in figurative-realistic oil painting. She uses her own photographs and film stills as the basis for hyperrealistic techniques, often characterized by intense attention to detail. In her works, she explores emotional, psychological, and autobiographical themes; she aims to break taboos, stimulate reflection, and deeply move viewers by making vulnerability, healing, and the invisibility of emotional burdens visible.
