About this artwork
The painting 'Untitled (Series 8, No. 2)' depicts an elderly woman lying in bed. The figure is wrapped in whitish sheets and a light-colored top. Her body lies slightly tilted in the picture, her head resting on a pillow. In the lower part of the painting, a second person is only fragmentarily visible through a hand grasping the elderly woman's. The composition draws the viewer's eye to her face. The muted colors and soft, shadowless light create… a quiet, intimate atmosphere, in which the undefined background avoids any distractions. The central motif is the gesture of holding hands, thus addressing care, farewell, and support in the face of death. Through the realistic, unsentimental depiction of vulnerable physicality, the painting becomes a visual reflection on transience, powerlessness, and the existential significance of physical closeness in the final stage of life.
Claudia Kaak is a painter with a background in art education, specializing in figurative-realistic oil painting. She uses her own photographs and film stills as the basis for hyperrealistic techniques, often characterized by intense attention to detail. In her works, she explores emotional, psychological, and autobiographical themes; she aims to break taboos, stimulate reflection, and deeply move viewers by making vulnerability, healing, and the invisibility of emotional burdens visible. She is a member of the Portrait Society of America, Poets and Artists, and the International Guild of Realism. Her works are represented in national and international collections.
