About this artwork
The artwork features a human figure rendered in charcoal on toned paper with a red pastel background, showcasing a study in light, shadow, and the contour of the human form.
The figure, presented without a head, is shown from shoulders to knees, dressed in a structured garment that accentuates the waistline while concealing the finer details of the body underneath. Through careful attention to form, shadow, and texture, I aimed to capture the three-dimensionality… of the subject and highlight the play of light on the surfaces.
One unique aspect of creating this artwork was a life drawing session of an Egyptian sculpture at the museum, which allowed me to closely study and interpret the intricate details of the human figure. This experience added depth and authenticity to the piece, imbuing it with a sense of connection to the ancient world.
I hope "Tribute to the Ancients in Red" evokes in you a sense of awe and reverence for the timeless beauty of the human form.
Danette Newton, a seasoned artist armed with oil paints and acrylics, originates from a modest background. Her vibrant, geometric designs are interlaced with abstract, figural landscapes, produced free-hand demonstrating the beauty in natural imperfections. Newton’s creations are a dynamic exploration of color relationships, and an empathetic ode to the perfectly flawed human condition.
