A circle, and inside the circle, an uncompleted circle. The multivalent sign of intellectual property. The circle has always been the sign of fullness, completion, fulfillment. The circle is a symbol of perfection. The circle is a symbol of God’s being.
The ancient writers tell us that when Apelles, the most renowned painter in Greece, had to prove his mastery, he drew an ideal circle. And nothing else. It’s a rather telling example of… ancient formalism. In the seventeenth century, in one of his self-portraits Rembrandt depicted himself posed proudly before his easel, palette in hand. There is nothing depicted on the palette but a circle. It’s entirely likely that in order to demonstrate their greatness both Apelles and Rembrandt thus simply drew their copyrights. They considered it superfluous to finish drawing the unfinished circle inside.

Danja Akulin was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1977. He moved to Berlin in 2000 to study at the University of Arts, and still lives and works there today. As a student, he studied under Georg Baselitz and Daniel Richter. His aesthetic black and white drawings are minimalistic and conceptual.
