About this artwork
Any mythology dictionary will tell you that a hero is the son or scion of a divinity, the love child of a mortal man or woman and a god or goddess. The gods didn’t conceive heroes just for fun. They had an end in mind: the hero was destined to bring order to the world, to purge it of monsters and injustice. Heroes had everything it took to be worthy of this honor. The only thing they lacked was immortality.
In the Greek lexicon of Hesychius of Alexandria,… the hero is defined as someone who is “powerful, strong, noble, significant.” Heroes were born not only in antiquity, but in later eras as well. They are born in our time, too, mostly by means of virtual divine intervention—in the computer. Today’s hero is so significant that he’s been turned into a symbol. Danja Akulin was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1977. He moved to Berlin in 2000 to study at the University of Arts, and still lives and works there today. As a student, he studied under Georg Baselitz and Daniel Richter. His aesthetic black and white drawings are minimalistic and conceptual.
