Explosion
The symbol for explosions and the symbol for the sun coincide. We might therefore relate the science of explosions to solar and astral mythology.
Is the sun in Danya Akulin’s composition rising or setting? Whatever the case, the sun’s appearance reminds of myths about the gods. The myth of the Sumerian god Utu, who vanquishes dark monsters. The myth of the Egyptian god Ra, who slayed a gloomy crocodile and the terrifying dragon Apop. The… myth of the Archangel Michael, who casts Lucifer from the radiant heavens into the yawning maw of darkness. No doubt explosions accompanied all these events. The explosion is merciless. Whose side should we take in these skirmishes? Michael’s, or Lucifer’s? Ra’s, or Apop’s? Both sides had their merits. The explosion is a beautiful albeit immoral thing.

Danja Akulin was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1977. He moved to Berlin in 2000 to study at the University of Arts, and still lives and works there today. As a student, he studied under Georg Baselitz and Daniel Richter. His aesthetic black and white drawings are minimalistic and conceptual.
