This work is a sculptural wall installation consisting of individually cut-out paper butterflies, hand-painted in various shades of cobalt blue and turquoise. It explores the delicate balance between form, shadow, and symbolic presence.
I was inspired by the idea of transformation and a silent movement – by the moment when a swarm of butterflies… can simultaneously suggest stillness and flight. By working predominantly with one color, I wanted to emphasize not the individual, but the collective rhythm: a visual breath that hovers on the wall.
The monochrome color palette creates unity, while light and shadow add vibrancy to the work.
This installation speaks of change, transience, and grace. It addresses fragility, but also resilience.
Daria Startseva is a painter with a background in graphic design, trained in Vienna and Helsinki, and, after a career as an art director, devoted herself entirely to art in Zurich. She uses layered oil, acrylic, and mixed media, moving between poetic abstraction and reduced figuration, and experimenting with various media. In her rhythmic, intuitive compositions, she uses color as a vehicle of emotion, making the fleeting visible and the invisible tangible. Her works invite the viewer to intensely experience silent emotions and visual presence.
