About this artwork
This painting is a reflection of a vivid memory: standing on the shore where the trees meet the light and the sea begins. I didn't want to capture the moment as it looked, but as it felt: vibrant, bathed in sunlight, and gently stirred by the wind. Inspired by the colors of the Mediterranean, bold yet harmonious, I allowed emotions to guide my color choices. The brushstrokes in the foliage are loose, expressive, and built up in layers of yellow,…
green, and blue, creating an almost dynamic canopy. The tree trunks are simplified, graphic, and lyrical, lending rhythm and structure to the composition.
Instead of realism, I sought atmospheric presence: a place one might have already seen, or only dreamed of. This work is part of an ongoing exploration of landscape as emotion as memory.

Daria Startseva is a painter with a background in graphic design, trained in Vienna and Helsinki, and, after a career as an art director, devoted herself entirely to art in Zurich. She uses layered oil, acrylic, and mixed media, moving between poetic abstraction and reduced figuration, and experimenting with various media. In her rhythmic, intuitive compositions, she uses color as a vehicle of emotion, making the fleeting visible and the invisible tangible. Her works invite the viewer to intensely experience silent emotions and visual presence.
