About this artwork
The painting leans into discomfort and exposed vulnerability, using humor and awkwardness as a way to talk about gender, desire, and self-consciousness. It’s a birthday painting with no clear age, a portrait of someone standing in their own skin and not entirely sure what to do with it. Birth celebration is a common theme as almost everyone has positive memories tied to birthday or celebration elements throughout their lives, but on deeper inspection,… its odd that we celebrate birth days in our culture and even reward with gifts. The cake or cupcake is a common symbol tying joy and memory to the personal experiences of each viewer.
David Kurtz, an Oklahoma-born, San Francisco-based painter, began his journey in the arts honing skills under local artists and at Weitzenhoffer College of Fine Arts. His Neo-Expressionist style, inspired by the likes of Basquiat and Rauschenberg, employs vigorous and improvisational lines with a distinctive matte effect, creating layers of depth and texture. Through his creations, themes such as civil rights, and religious influence laced with dark humor are navigated, aiming to stir a mix of discomfort and amusement in viewers.
