About this artwork
At its core, this painting feels like a meditation on authority, chaos, and the absurdity of power. The fire-breathing rabbit suggests a kind of feral, uncontrollable energy that no authority can contain. The woman in red, caught in an act of expelling her opinion or voice if you will — beauty and danger occupy the same space. The disembodied heads that populate the edges of the composition evoke witnesses, victims, or simply the fragmented way consciousness… perceives a world that doesn't hold together neatly. The two small framed panels — a crowned batlike creature and a monstrous face — function almost like tarot cards or icons from as new religion, hinting at personal belief where the sacred and the grotesque are indistinguishable. The imagery commands interpretation, but the vibrant colors distract the viewers and lull them into a false state of comfort.
David Kurtz, an Oklahoma-born, San Francisco-based painter, began his journey in the arts honing skills under local artists and at Weitzenhoffer College of Fine Arts. His Neo-Expressionist style, inspired by the likes of Basquiat and Rauschenberg, employs vigorous and improvisational lines with a distinctive matte effect, creating layers of depth and texture. Through his creations, themes such as civil rights, and religious influence laced with dark humor are navigated, aiming to stir a mix of discomfort and amusement in viewers.
