About this artwork
the palm trees are symbols of comfort, leisure...in far off places—perhaps dreams the figure can imagine but not inhabit. Their repetition suggests obsession or longing, an echo chamber of mental imagery. Altogether, the work reads as a meditation on creative paralysis and the split between inner life and outer communication. The flat colors and naïve lines disguise a complex psychological terrain: solitude. It’s a portrait of someone caught in… crisis, torn between following their dreams or simply doing what they are skilled to do.
David Kurtz, an Oklahoma-born, San Francisco-based painter, began his journey in the arts honing skills under local artists and at Weitzenhoffer College of Fine Arts. His Neo-Expressionist style, inspired by the likes of Basquiat and Rauschenberg, employs vigorous and improvisational lines with a distinctive matte effect, creating layers of depth and texture. Through his creations, themes such as civil rights, and religious influence laced with dark humor are navigated, aiming to stir a mix of discomfort and amusement in viewers.
