About this artwork
This strange booth, or guard post watching over nothing stands on a high wooded bank overlooking the Allier river in central France, its purpose now obscure. I'm always finding story in place. The way this contemporary, or seemingly banal, structure of graffitied concrete resonated with the perilous and magical towers in the forests of fairytale or folklore. The superficial mystery of this little building connected for me with the far deeper collective… meaning carried in those stories. In this painting, heightened colour, and the jagged web of shadow and light almost fracture the solid scene into abstraction. The building holds it all together, as if the building itself commands the place.
David Forster is a self-taught painter celebrated for his masterful command of watercolour, often blending ground soft pastels with innovative techniques. He orchestrates a “resolution of chaos,” combining gestural splashes, broad-brush classicism, collage-inspired compositions, and vibrant colour contrasts to explore romantic, layered landscapes shaped by human presence and natural history. His evocative works dwell on the poetry of overlooked ruins and tangled forests, weaving stories that vibrate between abstraction and reality. Forster’s paintings invite viewers to experience both the fleeting essence and profound mystery of place, resonating with nostalgia, wonder, and longing. He is an elected member of the following societies: the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), the Society of Scottish Artists, (SSA), and le Société Française de l'Aquarelle (SFA).
