About this artwork
This is part of a long series of works reflecting on time, and our engagement with landscape. Recently, I've been been exploring the forests around my home in central France. These have been coppiced and managed over centuries, so in their current form connect us to historic time. But also they represent the vaster biological, evolutionary and geological timescales. At the other end of the time spectrum , the redundant relic of horse-drawn agriculture… I found abandoned in the woods brought time almost up to my own lifetime. It serves as a kind of memento mori in the scene, recalling the brevity of subjective experience. Such layers exist in our encounter with landscape as a story carried there. Place remembers.
David Forster is a self-taught painter celebrated for his masterful command of watercolour, often blending ground soft pastels with innovative techniques. He orchestrates a “resolution of chaos,” combining gestural splashes, broad-brush classicism, collage-inspired compositions, and vibrant colour contrasts to explore romantic, layered landscapes shaped by human presence and natural history. His evocative works dwell on the poetry of overlooked ruins and tangled forests, weaving stories that vibrate between abstraction and reality. Forster’s paintings invite viewers to experience both the fleeting essence and profound mystery of place, resonating with nostalgia, wonder, and longing. He is an elected member of the following societies: the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), the Society of Scottish Artists, (SSA), and le Société Française de l'Aquarelle (SFA).
