About this artwork
This painting, The Leads, combines fragments of myth and folklore, inviting the viewer to step into the story. The central goat-like figure, pierced with an arrow yet calmly smoking, becomes a strange emblem of resilience and sacrifice. Surrounding it are disjointed human figures—forms that feel both playful and unsettling. The chicken, plate and large phone-like shape are symbols of domestic comforts–things that we all find necessary, but not needed… for survival. The work plays with contrasts: innocence and violence, humor and tragedy, the sacred and the absurd. The painting offers a dual narrative, at one end unfolding like a macabre stage performance, where disjointed archetypes collide. While on the other end, it is a meditation on survival and the ridiculous balance of human existence, comfort and instinct. A fine addition to any collection, especially one with a focus on narrative art.
David Kurtz, an Oklahoma-born, San Francisco-based painter, began his journey in the arts honing skills under local artists and at Weitzenhoffer College of Fine Arts. His Neo-Expressionist style, inspired by the likes of Basquiat and Rauschenberg, employs vigorous and improvisational lines with a distinctive matte effect, creating layers of depth and texture. Through his creations, themes such as civil rights, and religious influence laced with dark humor are navigated, aiming to stir a mix of discomfort and amusement in viewers.
