About this artwork
In this painting, which I have titled "Nothing to See Here," I explore the idea of perception, proposing a space where reality and representation blur, generating a moment of doubt in the viewer. The representation of the folded canvas is the first thing that captures attention, inviting us to think that the deduction that it is a trompe l'oeil resolves everything, only to discover that the visible stretcher in the upper left corner makes this impossible,… restarting the cycle of doubt and prompting further deduction. Once this second trompe l'oeil is resolved, the viewer is invited to reflect on reality, since the preparatory drawing and the red stripe are much more real aspects that, in the first approach, were relegated to the background.
It is a work that at first glance may seem simple but allows for deeper readings the more time is dedicated to it.
David San Francisco, PhD in Fine Arts, primarily uses oil, acrylic, resins, waxes, colored pencils, and metals, merging his academic and teaching background with his artistic practice. His technique explores ambiguous abstraction, employing the subtraction and addition of materials to create geometric compositions that engage the viewer, inviting them to assign personal meaning to each work. His paintings evoke an emotional and cognitive transformation, prompting a continuous reinterpretation and renewal of the viewer's visual memory.
