About this artwork
A girl in a hanbok sails with a tiger and a magpie across a river, guided toward a shore where a Baiana, who has preserved her identity and faith in Brazil awaits them.
This meeting on the river, between beings from different cultures and histories, symbolizes migration, welcome, and the grace of spiritual connection.
The figures are modeled in clay and attached as low reliefs, giving the pastel surface a tactile depth as if the story were stepping… out of the frame.
Along the edges of the painting, striped saekdong patterns wrap around the scene, a visual prayer of protection and blessing, connecting Korean tradition with Brazilian resilience.
In this work, the Korean symbols of the tiger and magpie encounter the Baiana of Brazil, celebrating a moment where two worlds meet, protect, and embrace one another.
Daye Park is a South Korean painter with BFA and MFA degrees from Kyung Hee University, working primarily in oil pastel, watercolor, and mixed media reliefs. She masterfully combines traditional Korean painting techniques and folk symbolism with radiant Brazilian influences, sculpting tactile, semi-three-dimensional surfaces using clay accents. Her distinctive style celebrates the merging of two cultures, luminous color, and poetic softness. Park’s art is a heartfelt exploration of migration, longing, and connection; her works radiate warmth, love, and the tender courage to remain true to oneself across distances.
