About this artwork
Texture is one of the fun parts of painting for me. Usually, I gravitate toward rusty things with peeling paint, and reflective metals and glass. It's not because I love the places where tetanus grows. It's because I love the challenge of painting textures that look too real you want to touch them, or pull back and be careful, afraid they might touch YOU.
In this piece, I made everything calm, welcoming, with a spa - like quality. Much of it,… like the wet surface, are completely made up. A feather that landed on our deck, some rabbit pelts complete the composition, along with my favorite breakfast fruit. I want to touch the soft fur. I can almost taste the blueberries. I feel the wetness of the water and wonder why the fur isn't soaked.... Oh - because I made it up. There was no water on the table. Duh!
Art is best, for me, when it transports you to places that engage and fool your senses.
Debra Keirce, a painter and drawer with a background in biochemical engineering, masterfully works in oils and charcoal, drawing from rigorous classical training. She employs layered, tightly rendered traditional realism—often achieved through indirect techniques reminiscent of the Dutch Masters—across genres from photorealistic still lifes and marine art to portraits and fantastical beasts. Her artworks invite viewers into immersive narratives, evoking warm memories, wonder, and joy, aiming always to resonate with emotion and contribute positively to the well-being of those who experience her art.
