About this artwork
The famous woodblock print by Japan's artist, Hokusai, inspired this work. I am often surprised by what draws my attention in a painting. Is a big, colorful, powerful wave in motion enough to steal the spotlight from beautiful Mt. Fuji? Is a gorgeous sky going to keep my eyes from admiring the way light and color play on the surfaces of the mountain's peak?
I don't think so. I visited Tokyo several times, and you can see Mt. Fuji, in all its glory,… from miles and miles away. You get a good view from the Yakota air force base in Fussa, where I was a guest. It's an amazing sight that stops you in your tracks.
When you're great, you're great, and nothing can take that away from you.
Debra Keirce, a painter and drawer with a background in biochemical engineering, masterfully works in oils and charcoal, drawing from rigorous classical training. She employs layered, tightly rendered traditional realism—often achieved through indirect techniques reminiscent of the Dutch Masters—across genres from photorealistic still lifes and marine art to portraits and fantastical beasts. Her artworks invite viewers into immersive narratives, evoking warm memories, wonder, and joy, aiming always to resonate with emotion and contribute positively to the well-being of those who experience her art.
