About this artwork
Believe it or not, this 40 x 30 oil painting of the woods at Spring Grove, Cincinnati was executed en plein aire. I had driven through the woods and was taken by the lighting effects, particularly backlighting, so I paid a return visit with a large canvas. It's too big to fit on an easel, so I propped it against the side of my vehicle and worked rapidly with large brushes. What I was after was the literal all-around glow of being in the present,… being in that spot at that time. As an oil painting it seemed so stupidly ridiculous to attempt, but the result just confirms that it's only when I'm actually on the spot that I've come up with the satisfactory results that I'm looking for. P.S: I had so much fun with this painting, I immediately painted a companion piece of the same size titled Red Glow, Spring Grove, Cincinnati.
