About this artwork
Desert 1 is a textured, highly tactile mixed media painting that captures the dynamic movement of a sand dune descending into a dried-up riverbed — a visual narrative of erosion, flow, and natural transformation.
The composition features sweeping ridges of sand flowing diagonally from top left to bottom right. These marks, reminiscent of wind-sculpted dunes, lead the eye into an abstracted streambed below, where sedimentary lines suggest a memory… of once-flowing water.
The painting was created using handmade modeling pastes, thick washes, sand, ink, and acrylic ink. Small stones and decorative pebbles have been embedded into the surface, enhancing the sense of materiality and grounding the scene in physical reality.
Despite initial concerns about the abundance of texture, I chose to follow the natural progression of the composition — and the result is a rich, earthy, immersive surface that invites touch and contemplation.
