About this artwork
Desert 2 is a mixed-media painting in landscape format (65 × 92 cm) that captures the elemental power of the wind in a desert landscape. The surface of the work ranges from delicate powdery patches to hard, encrusted layers, almost as hard as bone. This special tactile quality is created by the multi-layered application of paint and pigments. Currents of bright yellow, earthy red, and deep brown form dynamic structures reminiscent of blown dunes… and stormy gusts. Small, incorporated details such as pigment condensations and stones reinforce the impression of a landscape in constant motion. The work exudes both force and lightness – it visualizes the tremendous energy of the wind, which continuously shapes the desert, but also transforms it into a poetic, almost meditative scene. Materials used: Light structure paste, fine-grained modeling paste, acrylic paints, pigments, Rügen chalk, ink, acrylic ink, stones, decorative stones.
Doreen Gehrke is a self-taught artist and geologist whose scientific background significantly influences her artistic work. Structures, strata, natural processes of formation, and the aesthetic language of the earth are reflected in many of her pieces. This combination of geological knowledge and intuitive painting technique forms the basis for her Emotional Landscapes – atmospheric, often abstract landscapes that depict inner states, moods, and memories rather than real places.
The pricing of her artwork is primarily based on the technical and time-related effort of the painting process, while the size of the work plays a secondary role. Further information can be found on the artist's website or on her social media profiles at @doreengehrkeart.
