About this artwork
Ocean’s Secrets 3 takes the series into the depths. Unlike the previous works, which were characterized by light reflections, this work deliberately delves into darker, more mysterious zones of the ocean. A striking, relief-like structure dominates the composition, reminiscent of underwater mountains, sediment layers, and eroded sea formations.
In the upper area, a lively interplay of intense blue tones unfolds, their restless, almost eruptive texture… appearing as if modeled by currents. Small elevations, cracks, and compactions lend the surface an archaic quality, as if it bore traces of geological time.
Below, an abrupt, brittle edge opens up—a transition to a darker, calmer space. Here, blue and indigo merge into a mysterious zone reminiscent of the blackness of the deep sea. This abyss hints at something hidden: emotional spaces that are not fully visible and yet have a profound effect on us.
Doreen Gehrke is a self-taught artist and geologist whose scientific background significantly influences her artistic work. Structures, strata, natural processes of formation, and the aesthetic language of the earth are reflected in many of her pieces. This combination of geological knowledge and intuitive painting technique forms the basis for her Emotional Landscapes – atmospheric, often abstract landscapes that depict inner states, moods, and memories rather than real places. The pricing of her artwork is primarily based on the technical and time-related effort of the painting process, while the size of the work plays a secondary role.
