About this artwork
“Gold fish” grew out of the idea of a meeting between ordinary people and something extraordinary. The two men represent tradition, routine, and everyday life—workers or fishermen who belong to the river and the landscape. The golden fish is more than just a catch; it’s a symbol of luck, wish, and opportunity, echoing old folk tales where a magical fish can change someone’s destiny.
The lantern’s warm light suggests knowledge, insight, or awakening.… It can be seen as a searchlight into the unknown: when we pull something rare from the depths—an idea, a decision, a chance—we need the courage to really look at it. The stone bridge in the background stands for connection and passage: between past and future, reality and imagination, man and nature.
Is the fish a miracle, a test, a gift, or a burden? The painting doesn’t answer; it invites the viewer to imagine their own story.
Dragan Marjančević, a self-taught painter influenced by his father's naive art, works primarily with paint to explore transformation and perception. He melds abstraction, surrealism, expressionism, and symbolism, creating energetic compositions where human, animal, and symbolic forms intertwine. His technique challenges viewers to confront ambiguity and hidden truths, evoking feelings of introspection and wonder at the ever-shifting nature of identity.
