About this artwork
This work is inspired by the work of Brazilian composer Dorival Caymmi, and more specifically by his emblematic song "Minha jangada vai sair pro mar". It also echoes the images filmed by Orson Welles, which document the daily life and work of fishermen building their jangadas — handcrafted boats — to go to sea.
What deeply moves me in these scenes is the way these fishermen collaborate, with skill and solidarity, to build their boats. They then… face the ocean, a symbol of a powerful and unpredictable nature, where the presence of death mingles with the hope and faith of bringing back the fish necessary for their survival.
The work also carries a strong social dimension, highlighting the daily life and dignity of an often marginalized community.
Eduardo Sampaio, a Brazilian painter and draftsman, trained as an architect and visual artist, enriched by his experience in São Paulo and Paris. He adopts a contemporary approach while cultivating a deep connection with artistic traditions, mastering plastic principles and applying precise techniques to give form to tangible reality. Through his work, he evokes psychological tensions surrounding the human figure and its relationship to space, conveying a powerful emotional intensity about the individual experience in the modern world.
